In the year 1926, first generation plumber Adelard J. Martel (1882-1963) better known by his nickname “Cap” parted ways from his partnership with Martel & Davoren Plumbing and Heating to start his own. Cap chose his home town of Lincoln Rhode Island as his new companies home base of operation serving the Blackstone Valley region. The company now known as Martel Plumbing and Heating, ran under Cap from 1926 until his retirement in 1956, surviving the economic collapse known better as the “Great Depression” as well as the 2nd world war. In 1956, his son Roy Martel Sr. (1911-2003) locally known as “Jake the Plumber”, took over the business where he operated from the post war era known as the “fabulous fifties” up until his retirement in 1977 when he passed down the reins to his son James Martel Sr. (1957-present).

MPH operated under James Sr. from 1977 until the year 2012. During this time, MPH saw many changes in both economically and culturally. Many small family owned businesses fell victim to the economic recession of 2008, resulting in closure. However, thanks to our ever loyal customer base, strong leadership, and un wavering attention to detail, Martel Plumbing and Heating braved the storm. In 2012 Jim Sr. passed down the business to his son James Martel Jr. who currently runs the business today. Staying true to being family owned and operated, Jim is accompanied by many family members such as his wife Jessica as Office Manager, daughter Natalia and his sister Elizabeth as Customer Service Representatives, his nephew John Morel Jr as Operations/ Service Manager, son Jake Martel as a Lead Install Specialist, and Cousin Raymond E. Landry as HVAC Manager.

Over the past 98 years of operation, Martel Plumbing and heating has become Rhode Island’s oldest and most trusted plumbing and heating company serving all of Rhode Island and neighboring Massachusetts. Today we stand with nearly 30 licensed specialists who provide second-to-none precision and craftsmanship. We also pride ourselves with staying up to date with the latest technologies and equipment on the market. To do so, we provide weekly personal trainings for all our specialists both in house at our state of the art live fire training wall as well as factory trainings held by our local distributors and equipment manufacturers. With the 5th generation of Martel Plumbing and Heating currently active in the field, we excitingly look forward to the future celebrating our centennial only 2 short years away in 2026 and to continue serving our community for generations to come!
